In case you haven’t seen Google’s latest doodle, this week marks the 50th annual National Small Business Week!
This year’s celebration of small business owners includes day-long celebrations hosted by the Small Business Association in four major cities, kicking off today in San Francisco. A two-day event in Washington, D.C. will wrap up the week with networking sessions, a veterans’ entrepreneurship panel and the announcement of this year’s National Small Business Person of the year, chosen from among the State Small Business Person of the Year winners.
National Small Business Week, first proclaimed in 1963, is an acknowledgement of small business owners’ many contributions to their local communities and the nation at large. Small business owners are responsible for two out of every three new jobs created in the United States each year, and their entrepreneurship is a key to continued economic growth.
The celebration is not limited to the major cities. Philadelphia and Atlanta are among the other cities hosting activities throughout the week, and many companies will also offer webinars and online chats that small business owners can access from anywhere in the nation.
There are a number of additional ways to support small businesses during National Small Business Week and beyond. By shopping at and working with independently-owned businesses, you can encourage their development and further their contributions to your community.
